Health News from Haiti: Looters prefer toothpaste

It has been reported that looters who broke into stores in downtown Port-au-Prince sought toothpaste. People in Haiti are applying toothpaste to their upper lip just under their noses to reduce the foul smell of decaying bodies. News like this shows how difficult the situation remains in Haiti and how desperate the Hatian people still need help from the outside world. Although crime is reported in Haiti, some officials have observed that there seems to be less than before the earthquake.

Now the quake is over, an old Hatian enemy looms to make recovery challenging: POVERTY

CNN World say that experts warn that poverty may be the next big obsticle for the Hatian people to overcome. Because Hati has so many dead and wounded, the next wave of health issues will probably be "death from untreated wounds and disease outbreak" (CNN Jan 2010). The solution to these and other health problems in Haiti require resoucres, which require funds from humanitarian efforts. The state support structures within Haiti have been severely damages as well, so internal support will not be as strong as one could hope. David Gazashvili of the humanitarian group CARE (www.care.org) summarizes the situation saying that Haiti is in a chronic emergency because they lack clear water, food and money.
The Hatian people will need large amounts of aid in the near future to avoide compounding an already devastating health situation.
